Frequently Asked Questions
What can I expect in the first session?
The purpose of the first session is for us to meet and get to know each other a little. It is important to feel comfortable with your counsellor and this first session gives us both the opportunity to see if we feel we can work together. I will explain more about how I work, confidentiality, session structure and other points. We would also look at what is bringing you in to counselling and what it is that you want to achieve. Through discussing how I work and what it is you are looking for, we can then see if what I offer is suitable for you or if it may be more beneficial to you to see another counsellor or service. Should we both feel that we can work together, we would agree to a provisional number of sessions and how frequent the sessions will be.
How many sessions will I need to have?
It can be very difficult to say how many sessions people need to achieve their aims for counselling. I have worked with people who have needed three sessions and others that have needed a lot more. Because we all have different life events, experiences and thought processes, there is no specific number of sessions that suits everyone. In my practice, we would have a discussion about what brings you into counselling, provisionally agree to a number of sessions and have regular reviews. As we go through the counselling process, you may find that you need less sessions that we provisionally agreed or more. We would be guided by what is right for you and your needs.
How quickly will counselling help?
It takes great strength to go for counselling as it can be scary meeting a stranger and having to talk about difficulties in your life. Sometimes people have found that they may be tired after a session or that things seem to be worse. Talking about what has been happening in your life can bring up difficult thoughts and feelings and unfortunately this is unavoidable. Though it can be unpleasant, the hope is that we can start to make sense of what has been going on for you and these difficult thoughts and feelings may lessen.
I want to book a session, when and where can I see you?
I am able to offer sessions in the daytime, evenings and weekends, depending on what is mutually convenient to us. I work from a shipping container village in Canton, Cardiff..
